Thanks for blessing us with an exclusive Lucille Croft guest mix! When did you get into DJing/producing and why?
I have always been weirdly obsessed with music - to the point that I won’t get out of bed sometimes til I find the right song to suit my mood. I listen to music when I cook, exercise, sleep, shower. Like I’d imagine most people do, I live and breathe it. What’s funny though is that I never really thought about a career in it til I was 18 and saw my first female DJ at a club. I went out the next week and bought my own decks and taught myself to DJ - I started out playing hard techno. As I learnt more about DJ’ing etc, I got bored, I wanted to dissect music and know more about how it was made and put together so I started sitting in studio with friends, and LOTS of time on Youtube, and here we are today. I still have a lot to learn, but I fucking love it.
Your midtempo sound is becoming an increasingly popular genre throughout the US and the rest of the world. Who are some of your biggest musical influences at the moment?
I’m not sure that I am a ‘mid-tempo’ producer. I don’t like the idea of being labelled for one particular genre either! I make and play what I love and feel, and that will always change and evolve as I do. I have a few mid-tempo releases coming out, as well as two house releases at the moment, and after that… honestly who knows. My biggest influences for music right now are Hans Zimmer, Trent Reznor, Gesaffelstein, Virtual Self, Illenium…
I absolutely loved "Don't Go." Can you give us any hints about upcoming music?
Thankyou! I have a LOT of music that I’m sitting on. A lot of collabs, a few singles, and an EP to be precise. My next release is in June, a collab I’m releasing with another Australian producer on Kannibalen. After that, it’ll be release after release after release, til I need a break. I have no plans of slowing down though to be honest, if anything - I’m just warming up.
I read that you have plans to move to the US eventually and I fully support this movement. Where do you hope to see your career in five years?
YEP! I CANNOT WAIT. I think if I want to take my music career seriously I need to be in the US, especially for my style of music. In 5 years I seriously hope I am kicking ass and touring the world/playing main stages at epic festivals etc. And collaborating with all the bands and musicians of my dreams. I hope I’m happy, and finally feel content and feel like everything that I’m doing is finally good enough.
You run an online publication, have a podcast, just launched a lingerie line, model, DJ and produce. How do you find the time to do it all?
I have insomnia haha, so I don’t sleep much. I have no idea how I do it all to be honest, I’m actually awful with time management. I just wing things every day and hope for the best, and so far it’s worked?! I have another venture in mind that I want to explore, revolving around mental health and the music industry. If I wasn’t stupidly busy I’d feel bored and uninspired, as weird as it sounds, I need my plate to be really full to really function and be in my prime state.
Speaking of doing it all, your brand new lingerie line is everything. How does it feel to finally launch it after so many years of planning and what is the goal behind it?
R-E-L-I-E-F. SHOCK. So many emotions!!! It’s been nearly TWO years in the making. I have had every single thing imaginable go wrong with the entire process, but it’s finally up and running, and I couldn’t be happier and more relieved. The brand is honestly a part of me, I poured my heart and soul into it, and I am so happy that I didn’t give up on it. The goal for the brand was to create something that would be more than another clothing brand. I wanted to create something that had feeling and meaning behind it, and eventually I have plans for it to be far more than just a lingerie line. I'm already developing a merch line that will be 'Bad Wolf' branded, and then after that... so much more.
Someone recently referred to you as "the tomb raider of bass music." Does this slight Lara Croft reference have anything to do with your stage name?
Yeah haha, possibly the greatest compliment I’ve ever received. ‘Lucille Croft’ isn’t actually a stage name, it’s my real name. But being referred to Lara Croft is amazing because she is one seriously badass woman. I thought long and hard about whether or not I should use an alias, but I like the idea of it all just being 100% Lucille - what you see is what you get. All the music I make and play, is music I fucking love, everything I wear, my branding etc. It’s all exactly me, not some carefully crafted brand for an artist.
What will we be hearing in your guest mix today? (PS - if you can please include a tracklist, that'd be great!)
A few teasers from me, some new IDs from friends, + some tunes that I am just absolutely vibing!
Finally, what does GRL GANG mean to you?
It means so much. Girls need to support girls. The music industry is very male dominated, so it’s amazing to have a really cool female support group. I love the GRL GANG and confide in them all the time about things, advice, new music etc. This whole industry in general just needs to be more supportive and less about comparing dick sizes and cutting throats, and I think this group is the beginning of that change.
